Child Custody and Visitation/Parenting Time

Denver, Colorado, Child Custody and Visitation Lawyer

If you have minor children, child custody and visitation rights are a central part of your divorce process. Your involvement with the raising of your child, your presence during much of his or her childhood and your child's well-being are at stake. What could be more important to you?

When you are considering and working through a divorce, questions regarding custody options and solutions abound. I help parents through the difficult process of determining what is best for them and their children and strive to implement the decisions in court.

Experienced, Effective Child Custody and Visitation Attorney

Parents have many factors to consider when deciding on which type of custody and visitation arrangement to pursue. Often, anxiety is increased by the fear of losing regular contact with the child or the fear that one parent will gain inordinate control over the child.

I work with parents to determine the best possible arrangement. I advise that parents must pay attention primarily to their children's needs. I have found that when parents make the wellbeing of their children the top priority, the children benefit and decisions become easier, less embittering and more nurturing.

Each custody scenario is different, and many types of conflicts and misunderstandings can arise. Common issues are:

  • Often a child might not see a parent frequently before a divorce. I counsel that the child may nonetheless be very bonded to the parent, and the custody and visitation arrangements should reflect that fact.
  • A child may have a need to see a parent who poses a threat to the child or cannot guarantee the child's safety. We can put safeguards in place, including supervised or therapeutic parenting time - and drug analysis tests to prove that your former spouse is unfit for traditional custody or visitation.
  • A parent sometimes wants sole decision-making rights. I can work with a parent to determine if this goal is fair and reasonable. Courts prefer that parents share decision-making rights and generally feel that shared rights are in the best interests of the child.
  • Often parents argue in front of a child over matters that, while challenging, are small, like deciding which house the child's clothes will be kept in or who is helping more with homework. The child can feel pulled apart. I can help locate therapists who will work to define and pursue the child's best interests.
  • Often, divorcing parents are already living apart with a temporary sharing arrangement with the child. We can use temporary solutions as a template on which to base long-term decisions.

It is imperative that you work to resolve your custody disagreement, if possible. If your custody dispute ends up in court, people you have never met will decide for you. I can help you resolve your disputes and secure your rights.
