Many complex legal issues arise in the arrangement and enforcement of child support. They can be difficult to understand, anticipate and pursue. Some issues are:

• Arrears. If your former spouse fails to pay, you are owed the unpaid funds plus interest.
• County payment-enforcement support and wage assignments. An experienced attorney can arrange for the garnishment of wages, the interception of tax returns and the withdrawal of driving privileges.
• The Family Support Registry. When you use this service to seek payment, the courts can easily track your former spouse's support payment history.
• Support payment calculations and recalculations. If one of two or more children turns 19, enters the military or marries, support is not cut in a simple ratio; it needs to be recalculated based on court-approved formulas.
• Transfer or modification of primary caretaking responsibilities. If primary caretaking responsibilities move from one parent to the other, modified child support should be arranged. This support is retroactive and is calculated and enforced by the courts.
• If your child's other parent ceases to pay child support, contempt-of-court charges can be filed.
• Your child (not either of the parents) "owns" the support payment rights. Support payment rights cannot be waived by a parent in most instances.
